Today, on Earth Day, the Central Intelligence Agency’s (CIA) World Factbook unveiled a new category, “Environment,” to provide the latest country data on climate, air pollutants, major infectious diseases, food security, waste and recycling, and more.
“We added the new category in response to the growing public interest in environmental issues. Teachers, researchers, students, world governments, and many others use The World Factbook as a one-stop reference shop, and we’re excited to help inform others about the world in which we all live,” said The World Factbook Editor Michael Cox.

- More than 20 percent of the Solomon Islands’ GDP comes from forestry revenues.
- Liechtenstein recycles nearly 65 percent of its municipal solid waste.
- More than 80 percent of Comoros’ land area is used for agriculture.
While CIA updates The World Factbook weekly, the “Environment” is one of just three new categories—”Energy” and “Terrorism” are the others—to be added in nearly 25 years.
